Spain Team for 2010 World Cup
As far as the FIFA World Cup 2010 goes, Spain is now a big name. In every game the Spaniards play, the statement they make is getting stronger and stronger. Making it to the World Cup by winning each and every qualifying game is no regular feat, and this is exactly what Spain’s national football team have pulled off. La Roja or the Spanish football team clinched the distinction for being the European Zone’s second top scorers in the qualifying matches. They scored 28 goals and gave away only 5, now isn’t that a performance of dreams? The Spaniards have been witty in their approach to the World Cup, their short and quick passes and constant ‘renewal’ of the team’s composition has seen them past the qualifying stages. Steady improvisation, flexibility and determination in the face of competition have helped the Spaniards in their campaign to the top. Few teams in the world can boast of a squad such as the present Spanish squad. Their talent and depth of the same is unparalleled in world football, arguably at least.
The Spaniards when going in to play the qualifying matches enjoyed the honor of being the European champions, courtesy their UEFA EURO 2008 victory. This was not really a good thing, only because it meant that the team will have to face the best of their competition. For their opponents, beating the European champions would have been a big claim to fame indeed. Their hard earned 1-0 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina is testament to this fact. After this challenging win, the Spaniards sailed comfortably past Armenia and Estonia only to fight hard for nine precious points when they faced Turkey. The Spanish then made a gargantuan statement when they beat La Coruna 5-0 and brushed aside Estonia with a 3-0 win at home. Success in Armenia and a 5-2 clobbering win against a once gritty Bosnia-Herzegovina helped end Spain’s campaign on a very high note.
"We've got good players and a well-oiled team, but there are some very strong sides out there. Our aim is to challenge for the next World Cup but we know how difficult it is. We're not the favourites, but we are among the hopefuls”, confessed Vicente del Bosque, the Spanish coach. However as far as players go, the Spain team have a handful of both established and emerging talent. The Captain of the team – Iker Casillas is possibly the world’s most able keeper; he is a man who is capable of reacting as fast as lightning when guarding the posts. David Villa and Fernando ‘El Nino’ Torres are well known for their talents in finishing what has been initiated. Xavi Hernandez, the gifted midfielder is another player to look out for. The flow of the game will depend a lot on his inch to inch passing and tackling abilities.
Everything said and done, a lot will be expected from this genius of a team, which has not missed out on a single edition of the FIFA World Cup tournaments, the German 1974 tournament notwithstanding.
