Cameroon Team for World Cup 2010
The Cameroon national football team qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup when they pummeled Morocco 2-0. This was least expected after their pedestrian start that didn’t complement the talent that the team possesses. Their first two matches resulted in draws but they managed to step it up defeating Gabon and wolfing down Togo 3-0. Their sloppy start was supplemented by four consecutive wins against their rivals, thus paving their way to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The efforts of the team’s goalkeeper, Carlos Kameni shone right through the final round contests. Only two goals went past him in the six final round matches that he played. Rigobert Song and Geremi Njitap deserve props for their gladiator like performances on the field.
As far as their continent goes, for five times at the world stage the Cameroonian football team has been the best. Their heroic strides at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy have only been matched by Senegal in the 2002 edition of the FIFA World Cup. However, not everything is as rosy as it seems for ‘Team Cameroon’. After their brilliance at the 1990 FIFA World Cup tournament, the shimmer the squad exhibited soon toned itself down to a dull and fading light. Since then, the Cameroonians have never really made it past the group stages in all of their three finals appearances.
A heartbreak for the team was when they lost to Egypt (Germany 2006) due to a faulty penalty kick. This prevented them from sailing past the group stages. Post Italy, the team won just once in all of their nine matches at the world stage. This time however, a beacon of hope has been detected on the horizon. Great feats are expected from Samuel Eto’o, the exceptional Cameroon striker and fresh talents in the form Francois Omam-Biyiks and Roger Millas. “We are dangerous because we have a good mix of experience, and we have learned to play together,” proclaimed Samuel Eto’o. Will this claim hold itself together in the face of competitive aggression? We’ll have to wait and watch.
