England Team for World Cup 2010
One of the two oldest teams in the world, England lifted the FIFA World Cup in 1966 on home ground. After rather disappointing performances at the last two world cups, England is back on track with their new coach Fabio Capello, who is one of the most successful coaches around, winning Italian Serie A with AC Milan, AS Roma and Juventus as well as guiding Real Madrid to the La Liga Championship, twice.
During the FIFA qualifying tournament, England was back in form winning nine of the ten games they played, losing only to Ukraine. They also managed to score the highest number of goals from the European Zone netting a whopping 34 goals from ten games.
The defense line-up includes Captain Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Ashley Cole, all three with previous World Cup Experience. Leading the team from the front is Striker Wayne Rooney, his very well known aggressive attacking play found the net nine times in nine games during the qualifiers. Lanky Striker Peter Crouch grabbed four goals in four games he played. With help from midfield duo Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard and Forward, Jermain Defoe, England has patched together quite an impressive team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup 2010.
England has played in a total of 11 FIFA World Cups to date, winning once in 1996. In 1990 with Gary Linekar, Paul Gascoigne, David Plat on their side they reached the final four only to lose out to eventual champions West Germany. This World Cup the English team could have an added advantage over the other teams, with the tournament taking place during the South African winter season, since they’re more used to playing in such weather conditions than most of the other teams in the tournament.
