Argentina Team for World Cup 2010

Two-time World Champions Argentina makes it the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals after some of the most grueling matches during the qualifying rounds. With one of the football greats Diego Armando Maradona coaching the team, the Argentineans are on the race to win the world cup for the first time in 24 years. The team including Messi, Veron, Tevez and a host of other young players who have proved their mettle on the field, might just atone for all the recent disappointments and help Argentina lift the coveted trophy once again.

The team started out in the qualifiers under Coach Alfio Basile, who was quickly replaced by Maradona after a defeat to Chile in the tenth match, which brought them down to the third position in the group table. Yet, La Albiceleste (White and Sky blue) won the next two matches by narrow margins to seal their berth at the FIFA World Cup.

Argentina recorded their lowest ever tally in the ten-team group system with just 28 points from eight wins, four draws and six losses. After their first ever defeat to Chile, they suffered even more humiliation at the hands of Bolivia, losing 6-1. After their second-ever loss at the hands of Brazil at a home qualifying match, Argentina got back into the game and mustered a win against the Peruvians and edged out Uruguay 1-0 in the final match.

Most of Argentina’s hopes rest on the shoulders of Lionel Messi, who is currently regarded as the best footballer in the world. He has scored repeatedly for Barcelona but is yet to make a serious impact wearing the national jersey. Supporting the extremely quick Messi will be Captain Javier Mascherano and the hugely experienced Juan Sebastian Veron, who was blamed for Argentina’s poor performance in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Known as one of the most colorful and brilliant footballers in the world, coach Diego Maradona has brought his impulsiveness and competitive spirit to the game, succeeding Alfio Basile. He has previously coached Boca Juniors and played in four successive World Cup Finals tournament from 1982 to 1994. His tremendous experience coupled with his straight-talking attitude could be just enough to encourage the Argentineans to go for the World Cup this year.
